Some snakes such as racers and whipsnakes are diurnal (active during the day), many others including the Trans-Pecos Rat Snake, Grey-Banded Kingsnake and the Mexican Milk Snake are nocturnal (active at night) and still others may be crepuscular (active at twilight and/or dawn).
In addition to the time of day that they are most active, a number of weather related factors also influence when many species of snakes are most active. These weather factors include air temperature, barometric pressure, rain and moon phases.
Individuals with a more serious interest in studying, locating, photographing or collecting snakes in their natural habitat generally pay close attention to local weather conditions in order to maximize their efforts in the field.
