The Texas Brown Snake is a small harmless secretive species found throughout the mid-west from northern Mexico northward to Wisconsin and Minnesota, including the eastern half of Texas. Adults usually are from 9 to 13 inches in length and the record length for this species is 18 inches. This close relative of the garter snakes is frequently found in flower beds, gardens, compost piles and under piles of leaves and trash. They feed on slugs, earthworms, grubs and other soft-bodied insects.
