The Trans-Pecos Rat Snake was once considred to be very rare, but it is now known to be widespread and sometimes locally common throughout the Trans-Pecos region of Texas where is occurs. Being a nocturnal species, it is seldom seen except when crossing little traveled roads on warm summer nights. Most adults get to be 30 to 48 inches in length with the record size for the species being 66 inches. Most are very docile and never attempt to bite, even when first captured. Adults feed mainly on mice and rats, along with occasional birds and lizards. Juveniles of the species feed almost entirely on lizards.
